Preston School of Industry 1894-2011

The California Department of Corrections and the Preston Castle Foundation were very kind in allowing us to capture the incredible story of the Preston School of Industry.  This was the first Reform School in California.  Prior to the opening in 1894 boys from ages 12-25 were housed with adult men at places like San Quentin State Prison.  "Preston Castle", the first structure built in 1894, was closed in 1960,  and the newer facilities were opened down the hill from the Castle that same year. The School of Industry's name was changed to The Preston Correctional Youth Facility in 1999. A law was passed that placed the responsibility for caring for these youth at the County level and  Preston was closed for good in June of 2011.

Robin and I had the distinct privilege of being allowed access to both "Preston Castle" and the Correctional Youth Facility.  We are very grateful that we were given permission to come in and photograph.  We must give a huge and heartfelt thanks to Ron, who acted as our guide for the entire day.  His knowledge of the history of the facilities and his kindness throughout the day made for a wonderful adventure.  Here are some of the photos of this incredible and historical institution.  The Foundation is working hard to save the Castle and there is much hard work being done in an attempt to save the buildings at the Correctional Youth Facility as well.  It would be a huge loss to California if either one of these historical sites was lost because of the lack of funding to save them.

The Monterey Aquarium: "And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth." Genesis 1:22

Robin and I had the pleasure of photographing the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  This was our first visit to the Aquarium.  It is beautifully set up and has wonderful displays.  It is evident how God's hand is everywhere in our world.  It is incredible how intricate and beautiful these creatures of the sea are.  What an awesome day!  And if you have never been, we would encourage you to plan a day of exploring this Aquarium!
